So, why "Audacity of Covin", then? Well, I would imagine most have heard of the book Audacity of Hope and when I read it last summer; it really got me to thinking. I always had ambitious goals to get involved with politics, but then Senator Obama got me to really thinking. To thinking about the smaller things or aspects that many times are not carefully analyzed and effectively addressed. He gave me a different outlook on how I can affect my future or more importantly, others' futures.
In 2004, then Senator Obama addressed the Democratic National Convention in support of the projected nominee, John Kerry. At that time, he was a little known Senator from Illinois. When the night ended, he was the next big thing in the Democratic Party and now on the national stage, where anything is possible.
In his speech, he addresses the crowd with, "Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope?...I'm not talking about blind optimism here--the almost willful ignorance that thinks unemployment will go away if we just don't talk about it, or the health care crisis will solve itself if we just ignore it. No, I'm talking about something more substantial. It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs; the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores; the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta; the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds; the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too. Hope in the face of difficulty. Hope in the face of uncertainty. The audacity of hope!"
Those types of statements are what grind at me at the heart of what I love about politics or anything in general. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a choice. America has always been said to be that place to take advantage of it, yet we are still a work in progress. But aren't we all a work in progress? That is what makes life so great, you don't know when its going to end so you have to take advantage of opportunity when you see it. Sometimes you have to the "audacity" to do what you know is best. The "audacity" to stand up for yourself. But most of all the "audacity" to stand up and know what is best for those who need you to assist them in that regard.
This blog will sometimes be serious, but like myself; it will also be light-hearted and fun at times. Also like me, this blog at times, might be a little unpredictable. So, that's the way it goes cause I have the Audacity of Covin in my corner.
