The Tiger Woods drama of late has got me to thinking about him and people in general. Tiger Woods was at the top of his sport and transcended golf and sports to become bigger than any golfer even the greats like Jack Nicholas or Arnold Palmer. Everybody viewed him as perfect; perfect in his sport and perfect outside of golf. He did charity work and had the perfect life with a beautiful wife, 2 kids, and money and endorsements coming his way. But in one fell swoop, it has all come crashing down. And now everyone wants to know everything about this man, whom so many thought was so perfect.
This isn't the first time that someone famous has been in the light for negative actions, but few have been as large or at a higher apex than Woods. The steroids revelations are a perfect example of that. In 1998, Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa were revered for saving baseball, but ten years later; they are viewed as cheaters and liars. We have seen someone like President Bill Clinton, who was respected for much of its presidency, show a moment of weakness with the Monica Lewinsky scandal. We saw a desperate and paranoid President Richard Nixon cross the line in wiretapping a Democratic headquarters to give himself a decided advantage in an election. Pete Rose was one of the biggest names in baseball and then he decided to bet on the game he came to love. These are all examples of individuals like Tiger Woods: they all showed a moment of weakness in what many outsiders saw as a someone incapable of such an action.
However, it is not really a moment of weakness as it is the fact that everyone is HUMAN. We can't put our sports stars and entertainers or anyone in a different spotlight. Yes, they are role models. Yes, they are supposed to act better than you or me. But when they go home, they put their head on a pillow like you and me. They put their pants on one leg at a time. They just get paid to play a sport. Elected to run a country or a state. Selected to star in a movie.
Sometimes in today's society we expect too much from one another. And we especially expect too much out of our celebrities and notable figures. Our mistakes our what make us who we are. The best learn from them and become stronger. Forgiveness and acceptance are natural signs in the process of life. And things that affect a family or close circle should be matters of just that: the family and inner circle.
Hence, we must always remember nobody's perfect because we are born imperfect and it is the journey that makes us who we are. We are all humans; special in our own way.
